Plasma transferred arc surfacing is a true welding process, not a metal spray process. PTA Deposits are homogeneous and fuse to the workpiece forming a metallurgical bond. Argon gas forms the plasma, transports the metal powder and shields both the overlay and adjacent base metal from oxidation and harmful gas pickup during deposition.
